Pakistani electricity consumers will see no tariff increase in June, the Power Division announced Monday, marking a significant departure from the pattern of monthly price adjustments that have squeezed household budgets for years.<\/p>\n

The government says strategic policy interventions have absorbed what would have been a Rs5 to Rs6 per unit monthly fuel adjustment charge, preventing an additional financial burden of approximately Rs38 billion from reaching consumers.<\/p>\n

Despite disruptions in liquefied natural gas supplies and reliance on costly furnace oil for power generation, authorities managed to keep the monthly fuel adjustment contained at Rs1.73 per unit\u2014far below what market conditions would typically dictate.<\/p>\n

A Power Division spokesperson credited the relief to several converging factors: improved availability of domestic natural gas, higher output from imported coal-based power plants, continuity in energy policy direction, and a targeted relief package designed specifically to ease pressure on consumers.<\/p>\n

The announcement comes as electricity bills remain one of the most sensitive political and economic issues facing ordinary Pakistanis, with power costs directly affecting everything from small business viability to household food budgets.<\/p>\n

In the first three months of this year alone, consumers received refunds totaling Rs65 billion through quarterly adjustments that delivered relief of Rs1.93 per unit. According to officials, this quarterly mechanism effectively offset monthly fuel cost fluctuations and provided breathing room despite challenging operational conditions in the power sector.<\/p>\n

Looking ahead, the Power Division indicated that the reference tariff\u2014the baseline rate before adjustments\u2014will remain frozen next month as well, with consumers potentially receiving an additional relief of approximately 20 paisa per unit.<\/p>\n

The tariff stability comes amid a broader government push to reduce Pakistan’s dependence on imported fuels. Federal Energy Minister Awais Leghari revealed earlier this month that 74 percent of the country’s electricity now comes from domestic sources, with only 26 percent generated from imported coal and gas.<\/p>\n

Leghari projected that local energy’s share could climb to nearly 96 percent in coming years as Pakistan transitions away from imported fuels. Feasibility studies are underway to convert power plants currently running on imported coal to use indigenous Thar coal instead\u2014a shift expected to further reduce generation costs.<\/p>\n

The minister emphasized that while renewable sources like wind and solar are expanding, Pakistan will continue relying on fossil fuels and hydropower for base-load stability and grid reliability. Currently, 11,500 of the country’s 14,000 electricity feeders operate without load-shedding, though areas with high transmission losses continue experiencing outages.<\/p>\n

The government has set an ambitious target of achieving 96 percent clean energy by 2032, with plans for transformer-level management to improve efficiency and reduce losses across the distribution network.<\/p>\n
