Field Marshal Munir represented Pakistan in that call.

“The discussions provided a useful opportunity to exchange views on the current regional situation and how to move the ongoing peace efforts forward to bring lasting peace in the region,” the prime minister said. “Pakistan will continue its peace efforts with utmost sincerity and we hope to host the next round of talks very soon.”

Pakistan has emerged as the central mediator in the conflict, which erupted on February 28 when the United States and Israel launched coordinated strikes on Iran. Tehran retaliated with missile and drone attacks across the region and imposed controls on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital chokepoint for global energy supplies. The closure of the strait has sent oil prices to historic highs, fueling inflation worldwide and hammering economic growth.

Islamabad brokered a fragile ceasefire on April 8 and hosted the first round of direct US-Iran talks on April 11 and 12. Those negotiations ended without a permanent agreement, but Pakistan has maintained intensive backchannel efforts to narrow the gap between Washington and Tehran.

Field Marshal Munir’s visit to Tehran on Friday and Saturday marked a critical phase in those efforts. According to the Inter-Services Public Relations, the military’s media wing, the army chief held meetings with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, and Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni. The discussions were described as taking place in a “positive and constructive environment.”

“The intensive negotiations over the last 24 hours have resulted in encouraging progress towards a final understanding,” the ISPR said in a statement. Iranian officials praised Pakistan’s “sincere and constructive” role in facilitating dialogue.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, who accompanied Field Marshal Munir to Tehran, has made multiple trips to Iran in recent weeks as part of Pakistan’s mediation push.

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif told reporters on Saturday that Pakistan’s efforts were “gradually moving towards a positive outcome,” adding that the presence of senior Pakistani officials in Tehran signaled the matter was nearing resolution. He expressed hope for peace across the region and beyond.

Meanwhile, Trump said on Saturday that Washington and Tehran had “largely negotiated” a memorandum of understanding on a peace deal that would lead to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. However, he later tempered expectations, saying he had instructed American negotiators “not to rush into a deal” and that the US naval blockade on Iranian ports would remain in place until a final agreement was signed.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, speaking in India, said there was a possibility of “good news” soon but cautioned that a nuclear agreement could not be concluded quickly due to technical complexity.

According to multiple reports, the proposed framework involves a phased approach: formally ending the war, resolving the crisis in the Strait of Hormuz, and launching a 30-to-60-day window for negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program and sanctions relief. Iran has demanded the lifting of sanctions, the release of frozen assets, and an end to the US blockade. Washington insists Iran must never develop nuclear weapons and must dispose of its stockpile of enriched uranium.

Iranian officials confirmed that a draft agreement was under discussion but stressed that key issues, including the release of frozen funds and the scope of nuclear negotiations, remained unresolved. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baqaei said Tehran’s priority was ending the threat of new US attacks and resolving the conflict in Lebanon, where Iranian-backed Hezbollah is fighting Israeli forces.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he and Trump agreed that any final agreement must “eliminate the nuclear threat entirely.”

Pakistan’s role in the mediation has elevated the country’s diplomatic profile and underscored its strategic importance in regional security. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar praised Field Marshal Munir for playing a “central role throughout this sensitive and consequential process” and credited PM Shehbaz for his “visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to peace.”

Dar also acknowledged the constructive engagement of regional partners including Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Egypt, and Qatar, saying their support had contributed meaningfully to the diplomatic progress.

“Pakistan remains firmly committed to supporting all sincere efforts aimed at lasting peace, mutual respect, and regional stability,” Dar said. “Dialogue and diplomacy must prevail over conflict and confrontation for the collective prosperity and security of our region and beyond.”

The war has wreaked havoc on the global economy, with the surge in oil prices stoking fears of rampant inflation. About one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas shipments traveled through the Strait of Hormuz before the conflict began.

Defence Minister Asif acknowledged the economic toll, saying Pakistan was in a recovery phase before the war but that the conflict had caused the economy to suffer badly. “The recovery process had not only stalled but had also reversed,” he said.

As diplomatic efforts intensify, all eyes are now on Pakistan to see whether Islamabad can once again bring Washington and Tehran to the negotiating table and help broker a lasting peace that would end the conflict and reopen the vital energy corridor.

Pakistan is preparing to host a fresh round of high-stakes negotiations between the United States and Iran in the coming days, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced on Sunday, as diplomatic momentum builds toward ending a

[7
3,6,9,4
post-59","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-world","tag-ai-consensus","tag-express-tribune","tag-geo-news","tag-journalist-ai
https://goodforfree.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/pakistan-set-to-host-next-round-of-us-iran-peace-talks-very-soon-pm-shehbaz-announces.png
["GET
