The directive comes as health officials in the Democratic Republic of Congo report nearly 750 suspected cases and 177 deaths from a particularly dangerous strain of the hemorrhagic fever.

What makes this outbreak especially alarming is the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola currently spreading through northeastern Congo and into neighboring Uganda. Unlike more common variants, no vaccine exists for this strain, and medical experts warn it carries a fatality rate approaching 50 percent among those infected.

The Ministry of National Health Services emphasized that Pakistan has never recorded an Ebola case, and the country faces minimal risk due to limited direct travel connections with affected African nations. However, authorities are taking no chances given the WHO’s elevation of the crisis to its second-highest alert level.

“Preventive steps are being taken proactively in view of the recent spread of the virus,” Minister Kamal stated, adding that the Ministry of Health and National Institute of Health are maintaining continuous coordination with WHO officials to track developments.

Health authorities have placed all provincial health departments and border services on high alert. Pakistan’s diagnostic facilities have been confirmed capable of identifying Ebola infections should any suspected cases emerge.

The outbreak’s epicenter lies in Ituri province near Congo’s borders with Uganda and South Sudan, a region plagued by armed conflict and significant population movement due to gold mining activities. These factors have complicated containment efforts and allowed the virus to spread faster than health workers can track.

Medical aid organizations including Doctors Without Borders have described the situation as “extremely concerning,” noting the unprecedented speed at which cases are multiplying across multiple health zones. Violence and insecurity in affected areas are hampering response efforts, while poor infrastructure makes large-scale medical equipment transport extremely difficult.

The WHO has revised its risk assessment to “very high” at the national level within Congo, though global risk remains classified as low. Two confirmed cases have already appeared in Uganda’s capital Kampala, including one fatality, demonstrating the virus has crossed international borders.

Pakistani travelers planning visits to African countries have been advised to review health guidelines carefully before departure. While no travel restrictions have been imposed, health ministry officials stress that vigilance and preparedness remain essential.

This marks the 17th Ebola outbreak to strike the Democratic Republic of Congo since the virus was first identified in 1976. The disease spreads through direct contact with bodily fluids of infected individuals and can cause severe bleeding, organ failure, fever, and vomiting. Symptoms may not appear for up to 21 days after exposure.

The previous major outbreak in Congo between 2018 and 2020 claimed nearly 2,300 lives, making it the second deadliest on record. Globally, Ebola has killed more than 15,000 people across Africa over the past five decades.

Pakistani health authorities have assured the public that all necessary emergency response arrangements are in place, with continuous monitoring systems activated to detect any potential threats at the earliest possible stage.

Pakistan has activated comprehensive screening measures at airports nationwide in response to a rapidly escalating Ebola outbreak in Central Africa that has now been classified as an international health emergency by the World Health Organization.

[8
3,9,4
post-57","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-pakistan","tag-ai-consensus","tag-geo-news","tag-journalist-ai
https://goodforfree.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/pakistan-locks-down-airports-as-deadly-ebola-outbreak-sparks-global-emergency.png
["GET
