Sources said the three men had moved only a few steps beyond a border pillar when BSF personnel fired on them without any prior warning.

All three individuals were unarmed and had made no attempt to cross the border fence, sources emphasized. The third man sustained injuries in the shooting and is receiving medical treatment.

Security officials described the incident as an unprovoked attack and a clear violation of established border agreements and standard operating procedures that govern conduct along the Pakistan-India international boundary.

The shooting comes amid heightened tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors. Just one day earlier, Pakistan’s military had publicly refuted Indian claims of killing a former Pakistani soldier in what Islamabad called a staged encounter in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

In that case, Inter-Services Public Relations Director-General Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry presented retired Special Services Group commando Havildar Muhammad Asif before the media, proving he was alive and residing in Pakistan. The move was aimed at exposing what Pakistani authorities termed a false-flag operation by Indian forces.

Sources also noted that Indian media outlets had labeled the civilians killed in Friday’s incident as infiltrators, a characterization they rejected as part of a recurring pattern of misrepresenting such events.

Cross-border firing along the Pakistan-India border has long been a source of civilian casualties, particularly in villages situated close to the Working Boundary. Over the past decade, dozens of Pakistani civilians have been killed or injured in similar incidents.

In 2016, a toddler was among two civilians killed in firing across multiple sectors. The following year, another civilian died in mortar and automatic weapons fire. In 2018, four members of one family were killed near Sialkot, and the death toll during that confrontation eventually reached 16.

A 10-year-old boy was killed in 2019, and multiple civilians were injured in separate incidents in 2020. The situation improved after both countries reaffirmed a ceasefire agreement in February 2021, leading to relative calm in 2024.

However, Friday’s deadly shooting has raised fresh concerns about the fragility of peace along the border and the safety of civilians living in frontier villages.

Pakistani authorities are expected to lodge a formal protest with Indian counterparts over the incident, which has sparked anger and grief in the affected community and across the country.

Two Pakistani civilians were killed and another wounded when Indian Border Security Force personnel opened fire near the international border in Kasur district on Friday, according to security sources.
