Pakistan’s women cricketers have etched their names in the country’s sporting history by claiming the bronze medal at the 2026 Asian Games, defeating Bangladesh by 31 runs in a tense third-place playoff at Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin, Japan on Tuesday.

The historic achievement represents Pakistan’s first-ever medal in women’s cricket at the Asian Games, delivering a moment of national pride and underlining the growing strength of women’s sports in the country.

Facing a determined Bangladesh side, Pakistan posted a competitive 145 for eight after being sent in to bat. Captain Fatima Sana led from the front with an explosive unbeaten 45 from just 30 deliveries, smashing three boundaries and three towering sixes to give her team a fighting total.

Opener Gull Feroza provided crucial early momentum with a brisk 31 off 23 balls, striking six boundaries, while Aliya Riaz chipped in with a valuable 25 that included two sixes. Bangladesh’s bowlers fought back strongly, with Ritu Moni, Shorna Akter and Nahida Akter each claiming two wickets to restrict Pakistan’s total.

The real drama unfolded in the chase. Bangladesh needed 146 runs but found themselves stifled by Pakistan’s disciplined bowling attack. Umm-e-Hani emerged as the star with the ball, producing a match-winning spell of three wickets for just 10 runs in her four overs.

Despite a fighting 46 from Bangladesh’s Shamim Akhter and 25 from captain Nigar Sultana, the Tigresses could only manage 114 for seven in their 20 overs, falling 31 runs short as Pakistan’s bowlers held their nerve under pressure.

The bronze medal comes after Pakistan’s semi-final heartbreak against Sri Lanka, where they were defeated by eight wickets despite posting 177 for four. Sri Lankan captain Chamari Athapaththu had demolished Pakistan’s bowling with an unbeaten 83 off 50 balls in that encounter.

Pakistan’s journey to the medal podium included a nail-biting quarter-final victory over Thailand in a rain-shortened contest, where they chased down 92 runs with just two balls remaining.

The team competed without experienced wicketkeeper-batter Muneeba Ali, who returned home due to her mother’s illness, forcing Gull Feroza to take over both wicketkeeping and opening duties.

Captain Fatima Sana, who was honored as one of Pakistan’s flag-bearers at the Asian Games opening ceremony alongside squash player Noor Zaman, proved her leadership credentials throughout the tournament with crucial contributions in pressure situations.

The bronze medal triumph arrives at a pivotal moment for women’s cricket in Pakistan, coming just weeks after the team’s semi-final appearance at the Women’s T20 Asia Cup in Dubai, where they also fell to Sri Lanka.

This Asian Games medal represents tangible progress for a sport that has historically struggled for recognition and resources in Pakistan, offering fresh hope that increased investment and attention will follow this breakthrough achievement on the continental stage.
