Pakistan’s battle against polio has suffered another setback with the confirmation of a fourth case in 2026, this time involving an eight-month-old infant from a remote area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa where vaccination teams have struggled to operate for over a year.<\/p>\n

The National Emergency Operations Centre announced Friday that the child, from Nurar Union Council in Bannu district’s Miryan tehsil, had contracted the crippling virus. Health officials revealed that three out of Pakistan’s four polio cases this year have all emerged from the Bannu division, painting a troubling picture of concentrated transmission in one of the country’s most vulnerable regions.<\/p>\n

Responding to the crisis, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif this week reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to complete polio eradication during meetings with representatives from the Gates Foundation, a key international partner in the fight against the disease. The prime minister emphasized that the national polio eradication program enjoys support at the highest levels of government.<\/p>\n

The Gates Foundation delegation, which included senior representatives Kalpana Kochhar and Anita Zaidi, discussed expanding cooperation on health, nutrition, and financial inclusion initiatives alongside polio eradication efforts. Prime Minister Shehbaz praised the foundation’s role in supporting Pakistan’s development challenges and expressed interest in focused programs for women’s financial empowerment.<\/p>\n
