The move comes as part of a broader crackdown affecting dozens of trading partners worldwide.

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer justified the action by arguing that America’s major trading partners have created an unfair competitive environment. The proposed tariffs stem from a Section 301 investigation into unfair trade practices, a legal mechanism the administration is using to rebuild its tariff structure after the Supreme Court struck down earlier emergency duties in February.

Pakistan falls into a group of 15 countries facing the 10 percent rate, which applies to nations that have forced labour import prohibitions on paper but allegedly fail to enforce them properly. This group includes major economies like Canada, Mexico, the European Union, and the United Kingdom. Meanwhile, 45 other countries lacking such prohibitions entirely face even steeper proposed duties of 12.5 percent, including neighbouring India.

The timing could hardly be worse for Pakistani exporters, particularly in the crucial textile and apparel sector. The US represents one of Pakistan’s largest export markets, and any additional tariff burden threatens to make Pakistani products less competitive against rivals from countries not facing similar penalties.

However, the proposal includes some relief measures. Washington plans to exempt certain products from the tariffs, including energy, rare earth minerals, specific metals, beef, coffee, some fruits and vegetables, pharmaceuticals, organic chemicals, and aircraft parts. Additionally, the trade representative’s office indicated it would create a mechanism allowing certain volumes of textile and apparel imports to enter at reduced rates, though specific details remain undisclosed.

The proposed tariffs are not yet final. US authorities have opened a public comment period running through July 6, followed by a public hearing on July 7. This means Pakistani officials and business groups have a narrow window to make their case against the measures.

The announcement comes as the Trump administration pursues an aggressive trade agenda aimed at reshaping global commerce rules. On Monday, Brazil faced a proposed 25 percent duty over digital trade practices, and Washington is expected to soon unveil findings from another major investigation into industrial overcapacity affecting 16 trading partners, including China.

For Pakistan, the development adds another layer of uncertainty to an already challenging economic environment. The country has been working to boost exports and attract foreign investment as part of its economic recovery strategy. New tariff barriers from a major market could undermine those efforts and put additional pressure on foreign exchange reserves.

Pakistani trade officials will need to act quickly to engage with US counterparts and potentially negotiate relief or exemptions. The coming weeks will prove critical in determining whether these proposed tariffs become reality or whether diplomatic efforts can soften the blow to Pakistani businesses already navigating difficult global trade conditions.

Pakistan finds itself among 60 countries facing proposed new tariffs from the United States, a development that threatens to add fresh strain to the nation’s already fragile export sector and complicate efforts to stabilize the

[2
3,6,4
post-172","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-business","tag-ai-consensus","tag-express-tribune","tag-journalist-ai
https://goodforfree.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/pakistan-faces-new-10-us-tariff-threat-as-trump-administration-targets-60-countries-over-forced-labour.png
["GET
